 Ryouma Appears
« Thread Started on Nov 2, 2009, 4:56pm »

Charred bark reaches Ryouma's nose as he sniffs the air for the rulers of this terra. The wind slightly ruffles his unruly black mane, and his dark brown eyes scan the empty horizon. Pawing at the soft earth below his hard daggers, Ryouma looks around again. He snorts, muttering, "Figure, when I show up, no one's around to greet me." Shaking his proud head, Ryouma whinnies, hoping to catch some horses' attention. Perking his small ears, and hearing nothing Ryouma whisks his long, silky tail in frustration. Deciding to stop waiting around for someone to come to him, Ryouma sets off at a slow canter. His inky black fur slides smoothly over well formed muscles, his eyes eyes alert for another horse's presence.

Trotting lightly across the snowy plains, my onyx daggers left a trail of where all I'd walked, trotted or loped. I kept glancing back over my shoulder watching my trail as I lightly breezed through my motions. I knew my steps were perfect, but perhaps it was my vanity that kept wanting to look back and admire the perfect patterns I was leaving behind in the snow. I was certainly admiring my highstepping, fancy footwork. Life was going rather well for me now that the war was over.

I had never enjoyed fighting and thankfully I carried the weight of precious few deaths at my hooves. It wasn't like I'd avoiding fighting, no, I'd done my time. I'd served my Nation. I just did my best to beat my opponents rather than kill them. Unfortunately a couple of them hadn't shared my same feelings and I'd been forced to kill them. I did my best to block out those memories.

Memories. They have funny ways of sneaking up on you. I had no regrets, that I could readily remember. I was Lead of Lightning Plains and had my beautiful mate Siren by my side. We had two gorgeous twin daughters between us. But... whenever I was away from Siren, the nagging feeling that I was missing something would return. Memories of Lucy would come back and haunt me. Somehow, the longer I was away from Siren, the stronger the feeling that something wasn't right would settle upon me. I think Siren knew this, for she was never far from me for extended periods of time. I know she meant only to comfort me, so I never mentioned my feelings so as to not upset her. She was such a loving and devoted mate... I hated to trouble her.

But something in the air was troubling me today. I couldn't really put a hoof on it. I had slipped away from Siren early this morning and had thought that a morning of preening and putting myself through my paces would settle my thoughts, but alas it wasn't working. There was something... on my mind. Something that was bothering me. I stopped and furrowed my brow, thinking hard. Something... about Lucy... and her death... Yes there was something about that... something that wasn't right... It was... A whinny broke my thoughts.

Glancing around, I realized it'd come from my border. I frowned and tried to recapture my train of thought but it was gone now. Shaking my dial and scattering my locks across my arched nape, I sighed and gave up. It must not be important... Trotting across the terra, I soon was in sight of my border and saw a stallion had impatiently decided to cross it. I angled my approach so that I would intercept him. Coming to a stop in front of him a few yards away, I jerked my head up high and stared down at him regally, albeit impassively. I wasn't into challenging others anymore unless necessary. You could say I was rather sick of fighting.

"Most stallions that summon me wait at my borders." I said, my vocals laced with only faint traces of pointed annoyance. "I can assume you were so eager to meet me that you decided to come looking for me, yes?" I asked, my tones easily giving him a way out of trespassing that wouldn't require me to have to put him through some ridiculous test to ensure he wasn't a young upstart trying to pick a fight. As if anyone around here wants to fight anymore. I believe we're all sick of it by now... I thought with a soft sigh. "What do you require of me stallion?" I asked, my tones soft on his auds as I watched him steadily with impassive ease. I wasn't one for pomp and circumstance anymore.

Hearing the annoyance in the other stallion’s voice, I suddenly realize how stupid my actions were. I was trespassing on another’s lands, who had every right to chase me off. However, I was not about to admit my mistake. Biting back a sharp retort, which would not be a very good first impression, I chose my words carefully as I look over the stallion. He was a powerfully built horse, and an inky black like myself. The stallion looked to be old enough to have fought in the war, and I briefly wonder if he met my parents… Probably not. They were a reclusive pair, and nearly had to be ordered by the king to fight in the war. The war from which they never returned. I could remember the day that they left, as if it were yesterday.

“Why can’t I go with you? I’m old enough to fight!” Ryouma stomped his fore-hoof for emphasis. His father looked at him sternly.
“You’re only three, and you have not yet been instructed in the ways of the firebender. You would be killed the moment you set hoof on the battlefield.”
Ryouma stomped his hoof again, trying to call up a flame. This action only resulted in him slightly burning his pastern. Biting his lip to prevent the tears that threatened to fall, Ryouma pouts, “I do know how to bend fire.”
Ryouma’s mother gently nuzzles her son’s neck, “Your father and I won’t be gone long, we’re just going to fight enough to satisfy King Anakin. We’ll soon be home.” Seeing a rebellious glint in Ryouma’s eyes, she adds, “Besides, we need someone to guard the cave. Can you do this for us, Ryouma?”
Ryouma thought for a moment, then retorts, “Guard from what? Everyone’s gone to fight. I want to gain glory for our name.”
Ryouma’s father lowers his head to see eye to eye with his son. “You would gain more glory by following your commander’s orders. If you refuse to stay behind, or try to follow your mother and I, and I will find out if you do, then I will send you to say with your grandmother. Will you follow my orders?”
Ryouma lowers his eyes, “Yes, Father.”
The older stallion straightens. “Good.” Turning to his mate, he says, “We must leave now, or we won’t reach the field until tonight. Ryouma, we will be back. If enemies intrude on our territory, you will flee to your grandmother’s. Understood?”
Shuffling his feet, Ryouma mutters “Yes, I understand.”
Giving a sharp nod, Ryouma’s father turns and leaves the cave. His mate nuzzles her only son one last time before following him. Ryouma stood at the entrance to the cave to watch the gallop away until he could no longer see them. When they disappeared over the horizon, Ryouma turned and walked back into the cave.

Shaking myself from my thoughts, I say to the stallion, my head held high, “I am Ryouma, and I wish to speak with the lead stallion of these plains.”

Silence often is a sign of reflection. It gives both the listener and the speaker a chance to gather their thoughts or perhaps reorder them in a better way so as to get their message across. Sometimes it means they are simply processing what's already been said and are mulling over the best reply to given the current situation. I'm not sure which of the above this stallion fell into, but as the silence briefly lingered, I found myself analyzing him as most stallions do. I concluded he was little threat to me. He was almost half my age, but didn't appear to be the type to go spouting off challenges to the first Lead Stallion he ran into. That was comforting for as I said, I was mortal sick of fighting. We all were.

“I am Ryouma, and I wish to speak with the lead stallion of these plains.”

Finally, signs of life. I watched as the stallion shook his head and his lyrics reached my ears for the first time. So he was looking for the Lead eh? Amusement coated my lips and I found myself smiling as I briefly glanced away so he wouldn't see I was trying not to laugh. He was afterall being polite, it wouldn't be very kind to snicker at him for not knowing who I was. Besides, I hadn't exactly introduced myself properly, though I had hoped he'd have guessed from my speech the rank I held. But no matter, it was easily fixed, though I couldn't resist being faintly cheeky with him...

"Mmmm so you come seeking the one they call Sakima Chiaridice eh?" I asked as I arched a brow and cocked my left hind as if I was prepared to be there all day to do nothing but small talk. "Gee, I dunno where that fella got off too. Real busy kinda guy them Leads are you know?" I said, managing to drawl on my words like some redneck would reclining in a chair and enjoying pulling a good one on a greenhorn. "Whatcha reckon you want to talk to him about?" I asked, managing to keep a straight face the whole time despite my growing inner amusement. Perhaps it was a little childish for a 7 yr old stallion to pull pranks on a 4 yr old stallion, but everyone needed to get in touch with their inner foal right? Besides, what this Ryouma didn't know right now wouldn't hurt him, much. I gave him a friendly grin as I waited for him to reply.

Something about the other stallion confused me. When he glanced away, I got the feeling that he was trying not to laugh at me. Who was this stallion, anyway? Curse father for not teaching me about herd life. On the other hoof, I probably should have found out more about this terra before I arrived. At least the other horse didn’t look hostile, and he wasn’t chasing me away.

“Mmmm, so you come seeking the one they call Sakima Charidice? Gee, I dunno where that fella got off to. Real busy kinda guy them Leads are you know?”

Now I was really confused. At first he had sounded like a high-ranking horse, but now his whole outlook had changed. He must be high in the rankings, if he’s talking about this “Sakima” with so little respect. I wouldn’t allow my herdmates to talk about me so disrespectfully. I really should have asked other horses about who was who here. Now I was probably going to end up looking ridiculous.

“Whatcha reckon you want to talk to him about?”

By this point I was starting to think that this black stallion was fooling with me. It was getting very hard not to explode in his face, but I gritted my teeth and forced myself to swallow my pride and keep my expression off my face. Maybe later I could get back at him, when I could actually fire-bend…

“I would like to join his herd. Do you know where I could find Sakima Charidice?”

DADDY!

A young voice split the chilly air, and the source, a young filly, could be spotted racing across the snow. Her golden bodice was a brilliant contrast to the ivory ice, but starting at her knees, she blended in. Four white stockings and feathering helped her in that department. Her mane and tail were lusciously long and silken, and almost blended in as well. It was obvious the filly wasn’t fully grown, but she wasn’t exactly two months old either

Genvieve Chiaridice! Come back here!

Another voice followed the filly’s cheerful cry. This one was clearly an adult, and mirrored the gentle sounds of windchimes in a passing breeze even with the scolding tone to it. The source was a golden mare, her appearance practically screaming Arabian. The mare’s bodice and crania were completely devoid of markings, the only white on her being her mane and tail.

Desert Siren raced after the energetic filly, calling her name again. The filly ignored her, and skidded to a halt in front of the stallions, snow spraying in every which direction. Genvieve threw herself onto her hind legs, and bent her fores at the knee. She rested them against her father’s broad shoulder, and extended her neck, taking a mouthful of his lush mane. She tugged on it a couple times, and danced in place, keeping herself braced against the mass of muscle.

Come ON, Daddy! Let’s go play catch again!

It was then Siren reached the trio, and she stopped herself beside the filly. She lowered her crania and pushed it up under the filly’s belly, lifting her off of the stallion. Once the filly was standing on all fours again in the snow, she pouted, and Siren gave her a stern look.

That is not how a lady acts in the presence of others, Genvieve.

The filly pouted more, and plopped on her rump in the snow. With her daughter’s antics quelled, the mare turned towards Sakima, and nuzzled his shoulder gently in greeting, the seductive powers spilling off of her in a torrential downpour.

I apologize, Sakima. Genvieve was…antsy. Duchess went off to play with some of the herd foals, and Gen didn’t want to go… Said she wanted to play catch with you again. I told her to wait until you got back, but she took it upon herself to hunt you down.

The mare seemed to shrug a little, and the mocha pools known as her eyes turned towards the stallion before her mate. She gave him a brief survey, ears to hoof, then offered him a fake, but gentle smile. It’d be next to impossible to tell the smile wasn’t genuine – She was extremely well versed in masks.

Welcome to Lightning Plains, stallion. I assume you seek acceptance into the herd?

I jump a little when I hear a cry. Quickly hiding my surprise behind a mask of indifference, I look aroud for the source. It shows itself in the guise of a young golden filly. A second horse appeared behind the filly, a beautiful golden colouring as well. The mare was obviously the filly’s mother.

The filly in question was making a beeline for the other stallion, sliding to a halt in front of him. I shake the show she scattered from my face while muttering quietly, “Well excuse me.” The filly ignores me and instead tries to pull the stallion over saying,
“Come ON, Daddy. Let’s go play catch again!” I grin a little in spite of myself, this filly certainly looked to be a handful.

At this point the filly’s mother had caught up and promptly pulled her daughter off of her father.
“That is not how a lady acts in the presence of others, Genevieve.” Genevieve pouts and sits down while her mother turns to the other stallion, whom I presumed to be her mate.

“I apologize, Sakima. Genevieve was…antsy. Duchess went off to play with some of the herd foals, and Gen didn’t want to go…said she wanted to play catch with you again. I told her to wait until you got back, but she took it upon herself to hunt you down.”

My eyes widen in surprise at the mare’s comment. So this was Sakima… I wonder why he didn’t tell me outright, and instead just kept me waiting and thinking that he was just some other horse. I look over Sakima, and realize that I should have known from the start that this was the herd Lead, everything about him said so.

Looking back over to the mare, who was now carefully scrutinizing me, I look her over as well. She was quite pretty, although I carefully steered away from this thinking. It would not do to go drooling after the Lead’s mate.

“Welcome to Lightning Plains, stallion. I assume you seek acceptance into the herd?”

The mare’s question brought me back to the present. She was smiling gently at me, although by this point I couldn’t tell whether it was real or fake.

“Yes, I do.” I answer respectfully. Turning to Sakima, I bow my head, although it stun me to admit I had been mistaken, “And I apologize for not reconizing you earlier, Sakima Chiaridice. I am new to this area and was cut off from the Fire Realm for most of my life. Had I been familiar with the different herds, I would have known you.”
